Bill Gates at TED

I think the stuff that comes out of the TED conference is some of the best on the net.  If you’re not familiar with TED it’s a conference and the name stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.  The talks are diverse and I almost always find them fascinating.  One of the best parts is they are almost all around 20 minutes, so you can get through one quickly.

This years TED conference is going on right now and here’s the talk Bill Gates gave.  The title is How I’m Trying to Change the World Now. It’s worth a watch:

If you liked it I recommend subscribing to their podcast (link opens iTunes).  Or if you’re an iPhone user they have an app too.

National Kazoo Day

Did you know today is National Kazoo Day?  Well to celebrate it Simply Youth Ministry is having a contest and the grand prize is a year of Simply All Access (if you don’t know what All Access is, it’s a great quarterly subscription to really good digital products).

Just name the songs and send in your guesses.  Good Luck!

Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn’t seen it)

Have you ever heard someone tell a story 2nd or 3rd hand without really experiencing it for themselves?  That’s exactly what’s going on in this video.  A girl is trying to tell the story of Star Wars even though she’s never seen it.  I thought it would be a great illustration to talk about the difference from people that have a relationship with Christ and those that have heard enough about it to talk like they do.  Or maybe those who read the Bible and those that just know about it.

If nothing else, the video is pretty funny (at least for this Star Wars fan).

My Best of 2008

2008 was a big year for me and tech. It seems like a lot of the tools that I use everyday were not part of my workflow a year ago. Not all of them were new in 2008, but they became part of my everyday life this year. Maybe they can help you too.

  • Twitter – Love it or hate it, this has become a great tool for communicating, building community, and having fun. It’s by far my favorite social network.
  • Skype - Definitely not new, but I have started using it more than ever.  Communicating with co-workers, or family when I’m away from home it’s great.  I think it has one of the best video chats out there.
  • iPhone – This is another one you either love or hate, but I love it.  I didn’t jump on the bandwagon when they first came out because it didn’t work with my exchange email, but now that it does, I think it’s one of the best smartphones I’ve used, and I’ve had a lot of them.
  • Evernote – This has become an indispensable for me when it comes to gathering information and keeping synced to all my devices.
  • WordPress – Another one that wasn’t new in 2008, but I really starting digging into it, and I think it’s the best blogging platform out there.  It powers this blog and it’s definitely part of my everyday life now.
  • YouVersion – I just love having the versions of the Bible I like to read with me where ever I go.  I still haven’t found myself using a lot of the tools it offers, but maybe in 2009.
  • Hulu – This one doesn’t really have anything to do with work, but I have found there are many shows that I enjoy watching that I just catch on Hulu whenever it works for me.  There are a number of these tv streaming sites popping up, but Hulu is still my favorite.
  • Dropbox – I almost didn’t put this one on, but when I stop and think about it, I use it everyday to share files or keep them synced over multiple computers.
  • Mozy – Nothing about backup is exciting, but I feel a lot better about my data since I started using it.

What was your best from 2008?

Happy Christmas

I know Christmas was yesterday, but I couldn’t resist posting a link to one of the worst holiday specials ever made.  It’s just sad that it had to be star wars related.  Enjoy the opening scene of the Star Wars Christmas Special:

I realize this clip only shows the first nine minutes, but take it from someone that has sat through the entire 2 hours, 9 minutes is more than enough.

Mac vs PC

I’ll let the video speak for itself, but I thought it was pretty cool.

My Favorite Christmas Video Clip

This Sunday at church we were talking about the fact vs fiction surrounding the birth of Jesus.  It reminded me of this video clip from the old Mr Bean TV show.  It’s a great exaggeration of the secular mythology surrounding Christmas.  It surprises me how much students don’t know what’s in the Bible vs. Popular thought.

The Mapple Store

Love Apple or hate them, this is pretty funny.

This actually makes an interesting discussion starter on material things.

Turn Your Digital Pictures Into Polaroids

I’m going to date myself here, but do you remember Polaroid cameras?  I used to love to take pictures and get them instantly.  (Believe it or not, I still have one)  Well, I just found this fun little piece of software that allows you to turn any digital picture into a Polaroid image.  Enter, Poladroid.net.  And the best part is, it’s free!

After you download it and install, just drop your picture on the camera and it spits out your picture complete with sound effects.  Now remember it takes a moment for your picture to develop, so be patient.  They really got the coloring and look just right.  It would be a great tool to use on fliers or calendars. It would be super fun to set it up and let kids make their own.  I just wish it integrated with the built-in iSight on my laptop.

It’s only Mac right now, but the site says Windows is coming soon.
