The Final Frontier: Star Trek Catan

Earlier this morning Matt McGill tweeted that he would never be the same again and followed that tweet with a link. The link was to a Gizmodo page talking about the new rendition of Settlers of Catan. That’s right, according to Board Game Geek and Gizmodo, Star Trek and Settlers are about to collide. Now, to some of you this is HUGE, while I imagine there are still some (like our own Chris Davis) who don’t yet see the glory of this news.

If you have never played Settlers, it’s an “empire building” game that is wicked simple, and super fun. If you ever want to introduce a sweet board game to your teens this one is great, and it’s about to get better! Click here to read the rest of the news.

A few days ago Chris posted his geeky wishlist so I figured that I would post mine as well. Here it is for your enjoyment:

Blue Microphone Yeti Pro. This guy does it all. With both USB and XLR hookups, 4 polar patterns to choose from, 24bit recording (4x better quality than CD) and an on-board headphone jack for zero latency monitoring, this could be the perfect podcasting mic.

And if you want the best sounding of podcasts you need to run XLR into an interface like this one. The Presonus Audiobox 22VSL is a champ for on the go recording. All the power is supplied through the USB bus, plus it comes with Presonus’ Studio One recording software so you can say goodbye to Audacity (I actually love Audacity for what it is).

In my opinion Timbuk2 makes the most amazing backpacks in the world. Rugged, spacious for their size, and fabulous for commuting, their packs outstrip the competition. Here is one of their latest models called the Q.

Give your iPhone the credentials it deserves! With one of these covers you can choose between Engineering (red, not shown), Science (blue), or Commanding Officer (yellow). Though it looks great I don’t think I will be “red-shirting” my iPhone.

Announcements are Boring

Everyone knows it. Announcements are boring. So a few years back we decided to spice things up. We had just held a huge student conference and had brought in the improv comedy group CPR. The students went nuts over the improv. So why not combine the most boring part of the service, with something entertaining? Improv Announcements were born. The video is from a while back, and it combines 2 improv games. The first game is called The Alphabet Game. Contestants have to go in order giving sentences that start with letters of the alphabet (All I want is to get through this game. But first we have to talk about the upcoming event. Certainly don’t want students to miss the theme night. etc.) The Second game is called mouse traps. This one is self explanatory, so I will explain it anyways. Contestants have to make their way across a mousetrap minefield, barefoot and blindfolded. As you can see from the video, students now enjoy announcements.
